Universal Audio Volt 2 Max USB Audio Interface

The Universal Audio Volt 2 Max is a 10-in/4-out desktop USB audio interface with two Tone Shaping preamps and Max Processing, an onboard real-time compressor with six presets for vocals, guitar and bass. It converts audio at up to 32-bit / 192 kHz over USB-C.

Tone Shaping has three modes, Warmth, Focus and Shine, and Max Processing has six presets: Great Vocal, Rap Vocal, Album Vocal, Electric Guitar, Jangly Acoustic and Tight Bass. The presets are based on UA 1176, LA-2A and VCA compressor designs, and each can be combined with any Tone Shaping mode for more than 18 character combinations. Both are selectable per channel, and direct monitoring includes the Tone Shaping and Max compression.

Two combo XLR/TRS mic/line inputs with independent +48V phantom power and two front-panel Hi-Z instrument inputs support recording several sources. A built-in talkback microphone, two headphone outputs sharing one cue mix, an optical input for eight channels of ADAT or two of S/PDIF, MIDI In and Out and a USB hub complete the connections. A full-colour Smart Display shows levels and gain reduction, and Auto-Gain and Clip Protection help set recording levels. The Volt 2 Max is USB bus-powered, includes built-in loopback, works with UAD Console and LUNA, and comes with the UAD Volt Studio Bundle.

01Set the level

Auto-Gain sets it in about 10 seconds.

Select a channel, press AUTO and play or sing at your loudest level. Clip Protection applies a hardware limiter before the analog-to-digital converters.

02Choose a tone

Warmth, Focus or Shine.

Each mode applies an EQ curve and harmonic saturation derived from analog hardware, and saturation increases as you add gain.

03Add compression

Six Max Processing presets.

Great Vocal, Rap Vocal, Album Vocal, Electric Guitar, Jangly Acoustic and Tight Bass, with gain reduction shown on the Smart Display.

Technology

Tone Shaping preamps

Three modes. Warmth: tube-style glow with soft transients. Focus: punchy transients with clarity. Shine: a full sound with a silky top end. Each includes an EQ curve and harmonic saturation.

Max Processing

Onboard real-time compression with six presets, based on UA 1176, LA-2A and VCA designs. Pair any preset with any Tone mode for more than 18 combinations.

Smart Display, Auto-Gain, Clip Protection

A full-colour display shows inputs, levels, settings and gain reduction. Auto-Gain sets levels; Clip Protection limits peaks before conversion.

Expansion and monitoring

Optical input for up to eight ADAT channels or two S/PDIF channels, MIDI In and Out, a USB hub, talkback mic and two headphone outputs with one shared cue mix.
