Tegeler Audio Vari Tube Recording Channel VTRC

The Vari Tube Recording Channel VTRC is a German-built tube channel strip that puts a microphone preamp, a passive three-band equalizer, and two independently switchable compressor circuits inside one rack unit. It exists to take a source from XLR to a finished, print-ready sound in a single pass, rather than farming preamp, EQ, and dynamics out to three separate boxes. The signal path runs fully on triode gain stages, so there is no solid-state amplification between input and output.

What sets the compression section apart is that it houses two distinct circuits that can work independently or together: an optical stage built around an LED-and-photoresistor detector for a gentler, program-dependent squeeze, and a vari-mu tube stage that drives the triodes themselves into compression for a denser, more aggressive result. Running both at once lets an engineer stack a soft opto pass under a firmer tube pass on the same source. The EQ section is a passive Pultec-style network with selectable low-cut, low-shelf boost, a sweepable midrange dip, and a high-shelf that extends up to 24 kHz, and it can be patched before the compressors, after them, or into the sidechain for frequency-selective gain reduction. On the input side, the mic path uses its own transformer with switchable impedance, a separate transformer handles line-level signals, and a 100 kOhm front-panel jack takes instruments directly.
