Steven Slate VSX - Essential

VSX is a headphone mixing system that replaces a room full of studio monitors with one set of headphones and a plugin. Rather than just applying an EQ curve, it runs binaural studio monitor modeling — recreating the acoustic cues of sitting in front of real speakers in a real room, so mix decisions translate the way they would on that hardware. The Essential tier is the entry point into VSX: closed-back headphones paired with a smaller, fixed set of reference environments rather than the full catalogue the Platinum tier ships with.

The closed-back design isolates you from the room you're actually sitting in, which matters because the whole premise of the modeling only works if outside reflections aren't fighting the simulated ones. On the software side, the VSX plugin sits in your DAW as an insert and also works as a general playback driver, so the same monitoring profile carries over to non-DAW audio. Essential ships with seven modeled listening references built in, covering a private mix room, a commercial studio, a club, and a car cabin, plus two flat reference curves and two consumer-headphone emulations for translation checks.
