Rather than just applying an EQ curve, it runs binaural studio monitor modeling — recreating the acoustic cues of sitting in front of real speakers in a real room, so mix decisions translate the way they would on that hardware. The Essential tier is the entry point into VSX: closed-back headphones paired with a smaller, fixed set of reference environments rather than the full catalogue the Platinum tier ships with.

The closed-back design isolates you from the room you're actually sitting in, which matters because the whole premise of the modeling only works if outside reflections aren't fighting the simulated ones. On the software side, the VSX plugin sits in your DAW as an insert and also works as a general playback driver, so the same monitoring profile carries over to non-DAW audio. Essential ships with seven modeled listening references built in, covering a private mix room, a commercial studio, a club, and a car cabin, plus two flat reference curves and two consumer-headphone emulations for translation checks.

Key Features

Closed-back headphones built for isolation in untreated rooms

Binaural modeling engine reproduces the listening cues of real monitors in real rooms, not just an EQ match

Includes Steven Slate's private mix room, Sonoma Studios, an LA club, and a Luxury SUV cabin as reference spaces

Two HD-Linear flat-reference curves for neutral, room-independent monitoring

770- and Pod-style consumer headphone emulations for quick translation checks

VSX plugin runs both as a DAW insert and as a system-wide output driver

iLok-based licensing, with dongle or machine activation (no dongle required)

Upgrade path to the full Platinum room library later without replacing the headphones

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0816/6801/4303/files/Steven-Slate-VSX-Headphone-Mixing-System-VSX-Essential-PIG-01.jpg?v=1789206378
steven-slate-vsx-headphone-mixing-system-vsx-platinum
Steven Slate VSX - Platinum

Description

VSX Platinum is the fuller software tier of this headphone mixing system, built on the same closed-back hardware as the Essential edition but shipping with a much larger studio monitor modeling library instead of a trimmed starter set. Where Essential gives a handful of reference spaces, Platinum unlocks more than two dozen modeled environments, plus anything added to the catalogue afterward at no extra cost. It suits engineers who want to check a mix against several real mixing and mastering rooms rather than just one or two.

The extra rooms are acoustic captures of working studios and mastering suites, not presets, so switching between them changes more than tonal balance — it changes the sense of space and how a mix will likely translate on that room's real monitors. Platinum adds named studio spaces such as Archon, Zuma, NRG, and Howie Weinberg's mastering room, additional car cabins and nightclub environments, boombox and phone-speaker emulations for consumer-translation checks, and extra reference headphone models beyond what Essential includes. Where the closed-back VSX headphones prioritize isolation, Immersion One trades some of that isolation for a more open, speaker-like soundstage, using planar magnetic drivers instead of the closed-back model's driver design — a deliberate choice, since convincing spatial and Atmos monitoring depends on a sense of depth and placement that closed-back designs find harder to deliver.

Each earcup uses a planar magnetic driver roughly 97 by 76mm with a one-micron diaphragm, covering a 20Hz–40kHz range at 32 ohms, thin enough to track fast transients closely — useful when you're trying to place objects accurately in an immersive mix. Immersion One ships with the full Platinum software tier already included, so every studio, room, car, and club profile in that library is unlocked from the start, on top of a set of dedicated immersive, Atmos-oriented room profiles that the closed-back editions don't carry.
